[Blogparade] Thursday Movie Picks #78 & #79

http://wanderingthroughtheshelves.blogspot.ch

Includes English version :)
Because I missed last weeks topic I'm going to post two lists today.

#78 Downstairs people

I've had some troubles with the expression of "downstairs people" until I heard that it means "servant". Which was a problem as well because I had to find fitting movies :D

  1. Der verbotene Schlüssel/The Skeleton Key

Carol works as a caretaker for a paralyzed man. Soon, the young woman realises that something's wrong... A thrilling horror movie that makes you rethink some things. There's also a great twist in the story that includes a housemaid - but I am not going to tell you more about that ;)

  2. Chihiros Reise ins Zauberland/Spirited Away

Chihiro has to work for her food as well, the circumstances aren't nice either. There are strange things going on in the bathhouse of the Gods und Chihiro has to stand her ground. An enchanting anime filled with mythic creatures and beautiful pictures.
  3. Arthur/Arthur

Arthur has a whole bunch of people to look out for him. But most of all he's still depending on his nanny, who is always around to get Arthur out of bed. And of course there's Bitterman as well ;)

 #78 Post-Apocalyptic world

This topic suits me better and I came up with even more than three movies.

  1. I am Legend/I am Legend

One of my all-time favourite movies. The scenes that show the desertet world a very impressive. I also liked the way how Robert keeps himself from getting insane - of course with the help of Sam.

  2. The Colony/The Colony

A cold and icy world, human kind had to flee into underground colonies. But the horror is out there and it is getting closer. I wouldn't like to live in this world - way to cold for me...

  3. The Stand/The Stand

Stephen King's books are great most of the time. Which I cannot say about movies made from books. But "The Stand" is an imposing cinematographic work with depth and impressive characters.

Welche Filme fallen euch noch so ein?
What other movies come to your mind?

  1. A twofer how great! I'll respond in kind.

    Downstairs people:

Haven't seen Spirited Away but what a great offbeat pick. I didn't care for the Arthur remake but Skeleton Key is a brilliant pick, that would never have occurred to me but it's a good suspenseful movie.

I don't have a blog so I usually just share my in the comments. These are my three.

The Maids (1975)-Sisters Solange and Claire (Glenda Jackson & Susannah York) work as maids for a woman they detest, known only as Madame. Whenever she’s out they take turns dressing in her clothes and demeaning each other as Madame does to them. An adaptation of a Jean Genet play that was itself based on a famous pair of murders committed by the Papin sisters in 30’s France. Produced as part of the American Film Theatre but released theatrically this is very much a filmed play that features two award caliber performances from its lead actresses.

The Servant (1963)-Tony, a wealthy young man moves to London and hires the seemingly docile Barrett to be his all-around servant. Barrett at first seems quite competent and yielding but Tony’s girlfriend Susan is made uneasy by him and advises Tony to send him away. Once Barrett brings his sister Vera to work there too the situation spirals downward and ultimately the question is who the servant is and who’s the master?

The Fallen Idol (1948)-A young British boy, Phillippe, worships his father’s butler, Baines (Ralph Richardson) and Baines spins stories of his great adventures to amuse the boy. However Baines is stuck in a loveless marriage and when an accident occurs which Phillippe misconstrues his attempts to protect his hero only lead to bigger troubles for Baines. Directed by Carol Reed and winner of a slew of awards this is a great film.

  2. Post-Apocalyptic World:

I didn't care much for I Am Legend, Will Smith has really started to annoy me and I haven't heard of The Colony though it sound worth checking out.

The Stand!! Wonderful choice! Love both the book, one of the few I've read more than once, and they did an excellent job with the adaptation. Doing it for TV was the right choice too the story is too vast for a standard film.

Here's what I came up with for this one:

The Planet of the Apes (1968)-The original story of a crew of astronauts who crash land in a world where a society of intelligent talking apes reign supreme. They are quickly taken prisoner and discover that humans are now subservient. Both cheesy and impressive at the same time with hambone Charlton Heston the exactly right actor in the lead.

The Time Machine (1960)-At the turn of the 20th century H.G. Wells tells a group of friends of his time machine to their disbelief and one’s warning not to tempt the laws of providence. Wells ignores the advice and travels far into the future to find a sobering world populated by recessive humans called Eloi and strange creatures called Morlocks. This won an Oscar for its revolutionary time lapse photography.

The World, the Flesh and the Devil (1959)-Miner Ralph Burton (Harry Belafonte) trapped for a number of days in a cave-in, emerges to find himself the seemingly lone survivor of a nuclear holocaust. Traveling to the closest large city, New York, he finds it deserted at first but eventually meets Sarah Crandall (Inger Stevens) who has also managed to survive. They form a close friendship until the appearance of a third survivor (Mel Ferrer) and tensions flair. A three person chamber piece.

    1. "I am Legend" was the last of Will Smith's movies I liked. I fully understand your annoyance. But "The Colony" is an interesting movie I highly recommend.

I am happy to hear that you know "The Stand", most of my friends haven't heard about this one. Absolutely, the team did an awesome job and one can feel this in every minute of the film.

Again, I don't know any of your movies, though I of course have heard about "The Planet of the Apes" and "The Time Machine". The last one has been on my "To Watch" list for a long time and I guess I finally should give it a try.

"The World, the Flesh and the Devil" sounds fascinating as well. But I'm not sure if I would like "The Planet of the Apes" - I might try it someday.

  3. A 2 for one! I have wanted to see The Skeleton Key and forgot about it so I will make a note to see it. I Would like to see Arthur which is a remake of the same film done with Dudley Moore and Sir John Gielgud. I have seen I am Legend and always feel bad for the doggie...not the people as much as the dog:) The other 2 sound good but The Colony sounds depressing.

I heared that "arthur" was a remake but now I would also like to see the original.
The scene in which Sam dies always makes my cry. Always. When I watched this film in the theater I had to leave the room :D

I also liked "The Skeleton Key", mostly because of it's twist. Have fun with "The Stand" if you're going to watch it :)
