[Blogparade] Thursday Movie Picks #81

http://wanderingthroughtheshelves.blogspot.ch/

Includes English version :)

#80 Movies adapted from Movies of a Different Language

Now I'm starting to realize how much this series challenges me every week. I couldn't have coped with this task if it wouldn't be for Wikipedia. There are many well-known remakes but all I came up with were english remakes of english movies. Finally, I managed to make a list of three movies that I'm familiar with :)

As a kid I've watched this movie multiple times and I remember liking it. I think it's interesting that I still remember some of the scene, since this movie isn't really a great cineastic experiance... The 1997 remake is based on the French movie "Un indien dans la ville" (an Indian in the city).

  2. Insomnia/InsomniaChristopher Nolan.

Christopher Nolan. No further comments (I love this movie!) His "Insomnia" is based on the Norwegian movie "Insomnia". In German the title of the original (Todesschlaf = The Sleep of the Dead)  doesn't sound exciting but I still think this movie would be worth watching, too.

I'm not really into romantic movies but as a teenager I loved this movie. "City of Angels" is based on Wim Wenders "Wings of Desire".

Welche Filme fallen euch noch so ein?
What other movies come to your mind?

  1. Nice picks! Glad to see we match up with City of Angels. I remember finding Jungle to Jungle quite funny too. I should rent it for the kids sometime.

The kids sure will enjoy Jungle to Jungle, at least I did when I was young :)

  2. Was mir spontan einfällt:

"Vanilla Sky" / "Abre los ojos"
    "Martyrs"
"So finster die Nacht" / "Let Me In"
"Funny Games" / "Funny Games U.S."
    "The Returned"
    "Verblendung"
    "The Eye"
    "Oldboy"
    "Gracepoint" / "Broadchurch"
"Dark Water" / "Dark Water - Dunkle Wasser"
"The Grudge" / "Ju-On: The Grudge"
    "Ring"

    LG

  3. I picked Insomnia as well. Such a great one! I've seen City of Angels, but it's been a long time. Don't really remember it that well.

Happy to hear you liked Insomnia as well, it's not a very known movie around here.

  4. Good picks. Insomnia is one I've been meaning to see, it's in my queue just haven't gotten to it yet. City of Angels was too sticky sweet for me and I haven't seen Jungle 2 Jungle.

I went for more obscure choices this week except for my bonus which was quite popular when it was out.

Sorcerer (1977)-Four desperate men agree to transport a volatile shipment of nitro-glycerin over rugged terrain in the hopes of earning enough money to escape their present state. William Friedkin directed remake of the French classic Wages of Fear wasn’t a big success on its initial release but is a taut gritty drama. An international cast headed by Roy Scheider give intense performances. Perhaps not the equal of the original but on its own a solid suspenser.

Human Desire (1954)-Fritz Lang helmed redo of Jean Renoir’s La Bête Humaine is hampered a trifle by the Hayes Code but his great cast, in particular Broderick Crawford and Gloria Grahame, and solid direction fill in the code demanded blanks. Loaded with sexual undertones.

Intermezzo (1939)-American remake of identically named Swedish film also starring Ingrid Bergman served as her introduction to Hollywood. A world famous concert violinist becomes enamored with his daughter’s piano instructor. Feeling restless he invites her to tour with him, eventually they become involved and he leaves his family for her but soon realizes what he had originally. It’s a weepie loaded with beautiful music that’s worth catching for Ingrid’s stateside debut.

Honorable Mention-Point of No Return (1993)-Stylish, glossy remake of Luc Besson’s La Femme Nikita with Bridget Fonda at the height of her brief heyday as the druggie turned government assassin. Not quite as sleek as the original but a propulsive engrossing thriller with Anne Bancroft a standout in her brief role as an etiquette teacher with an underlying fierceness.

I really recommend Insomnia and hope you'll get to see it soon! When it comes to City of Angels I think I wouldn't like it if I saw it now, but I was young once, too ;)

Your choices all sound very worth watching (I should keep up with the older movies as well).

  6. I don't know the first one but I love the 2nd movie-Robin Williams was excellent in this film. The 2nd film..meh-I have not seen the whole thing. I like the premise but I am not feeling Nicholas Cage as someone to fall for.
